Pomacea canaliculata (Golden Apple Snails) are commonly seen in paddy fields in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and other Asian countries. They do much harm to rice fields, owing to their strong adaptability, rapid reproduction ability as well as their likings for rice as food.

Tea seed, also named tea saponin or tea seed meal, is the residue of the camellia seeds after the oil extraction process. As an eco-friendly biological pesticide, it has strong toxicity to cold-blooded aquatic animals while it is easily decomposed and can be used as organic manure as well as a pesticide to kill the Golden Apple snails at the same time. In general, as an insecticide especially used against Golden Apple snails, tea sea cake has such advantages as cheapness, remarkable efficacy, easy availability, and ease of use.

The two common methods از killing Gold Apple snails with tea seed run as follows:

1. Immerse the field in water and then spray tea seed powder all over it.

Spray the tea seed all over the rice field in a spiral way, starting from the edge toward the middle. The tea seed powder must be newly made (within one year). Each acre of rice fields needs about 10KG of tea cake powder. The depth of water in the rice field is 3-5cm. Do not change the water within 3-7 days. This method is the best way to kill the Golden Apple snails in the field thoroughly, but the labor cost is high.

2. Make the Golden Apple snail gather in the ditch after draining the rice field and then kill them.

Dig a ditch with a depth of 20cm around the rice field and then gradually drain the field. Most of the Golden Apple snails will gather in the low-lying ditch to get water. Then spray the tea seed powder in the ditch to kill them. This method needs less amount of tea seed powder and can reduce the harm done to beneficial organisms such as frogs and fishes in rice field. However, because sometimes Golden Apple snails tend to hide themselves in soil when there is a water shortage, not all the snails will concentrate in the ditch and thus some of them may survive the spraying.
